He was able to find homes for all the puppies, however Susan, the girl who took
in Sophie (at that time she called her Pepper) lived in an apartment complex and
when the manager found out about the dog he told her to find Sophie another home
or move out.
Susan went to visit her sister who worked in a tile store in San
Rafael and brought the puppy in with her. It just so happened that Marty and Candace
were in the tile store shopping for tile for their bathroom. Marty and Candace
had had a wonderful dog, named Patch that they had loved like a child. When Patch
passed away it was so sad that they decided they didn't want to get another dog
for a while. In fact, they had been actively avoiding looking at puppies lest
they be captured by those 'Puppy Eyes' .
When Sophie came in they both knew that this was a special dog.
Candace went over to say hello and heard that she needed a home right away. Marty,
still holding out, wouldn't even go into the aisle where the dog was. Instead,
he called Candace over and they left out the back door of the tile store. But
fate is funny. After getting in the car and driving off, as they turned the corner
who was right there but Susan and Sophie. Once Marty actually saw the dog he too
was hooked. They stopped the car and gave Susan their phone number. The next day
Sophie came to stay. She went out of her way to ingratiate herself with the head
cat, Lucy, laying on her stomach a respectful distance away.
And of course, she has become a member of the family, not only
with Marty and Candace and the two cats, but with all of the really wonderful
people that have become a part of her life. She was even smart enough that when
she met Mim and Kate (Mim makes the Bark Stix™) to decide that their house
was her second home. And she knew that if she ever got lost or in trouble, she
could show up at their door and be taken care of.
